Who’s Your (Hoosier) Hero

Project Description

In 2019, the Indiana State Fair chose “Heroes in the Heartland” as their theme for the year and it was sponsored by the Indiana Donor Network. This was a very special project to work on where we photographed people holding a chalkboard with their hero written on it. The Indiana Donor Network brought a few individuals over who’s lives had been saved by donors, or who’s family members donated their organs to save others. These were such powerful stories to hear as I photographed them proudly holding their signs. Beyond the donor network, many others who volunteered to come showcase their heroes had a story to tell and it was such a great project to be involved with. Who is your hero?

Announcement Video

At the last minute, I was asked to photograph the Governor holding his hero chalkboard to incorporate into the campaign. There was a possibility of shooting video but we weren’t sure if there would be time or if he would be willing. As we’re loading into the Governor’s office (which is amazing by the way), I’m told we are setting up to do video instead. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a continuous lighting kit with me, so we improvised with some window light. The Governor, with little-to-no rehearsal time nailed his lines, and we ended up using this little video clip to announce the theme of the Fair. I was asked to incorporate his announcement in with the images I already took of those holding their hero signs and we put together a this video in less than 24 hours — what a rush!
