Dale Oakley Identity

Project Description

Country music singer/songwriter, Dale Oakley was working on putting out some new music after a bit of a hiatus. Dale’s songwriting and look had both evolved since his last release,  so we decided to completely overhaul the Dale Oakley brand. I worked with my go-to makeup artist Erica Foit to help put together a few new looks for Dale, and we found a some great locations in the Indianapolis area to do his shoot. We made sure to get a few standard shots for Dale that we knew would work well for his core audience. But, we also pushed the limit a bit, and went with some more thematic looks inspired by the lyrics of his new single “Daddy Raised Me Country” where there he references that he’s got the spirit of legends like John Wayne, Johnny Cash and James Dean. I was inspired to create some moody, dramatically lit portraits of him inspired by some of the old black and white snaps of Johnny Cash. And, we found inspiration from James Dean’s look in the film Giant, complete with straw hat and a hint of angst. I also put together a new logo concept and showcased it on some tour posters and merch.

While we were shooting in the stairwell at the Stutz we couldn’t get over the acoustics in there. Dale had his guitar in tow so I switched the camera over to video mode and we improvised this cover of Keith Whitley’s “Don’t Close Your Eyes” and Dale’s talent did not disappoint. Enjoy!
